Following a discussion at its meeting on 28 February 2006, the East of England Faiths Council issued the following statement on rights and responsibilities in relation to freedom of speech:
The East of England Faiths Council acts as a central point of contact between faiths in the region and regional bodies and governance. As such it brings together people from all the major faith traditions in a constructive environment, providing a forum where they can work together on issues of mutual interest.
We believe that human rights bring with them human responsibilities. The Council endorses the right to freedom of expression, and urges that this be used responsibly, thoughtfully and with self-constraint. It equally urges people of faith to act with dignity and restraint when offered manifest provocation by the media or others exercising their rights irresponsibly.
Personal faith offers enormous benefit to society and the state as a whole, and both individuals and the state should in turn show respect for the religious beliefs of others.
